Why These Activities?

How do these activities help save polar bears and their sea ice habitat?  Most help by decreasing the amount Green House Gases (GHG) released into the atmosphere. GHG act like a blanket around the Earth, trapping the heat that wants to escape the Earth's atmosphere.  The more GHG that build up, the warmer it gets, increasing the temperature of the air and of the ocean.  These changes make it harder for temperatures to get low enough to create freezing conditions for ice and snow and melts ice that is already there.

Why does this effect polar bears?

Polar bears live on the ice and rely on ice to hunt and capture their prey. Polar bears eat seals and while polar bears are great swimmers, they are not designed to swim all the time. So instead they walk on the ice to get their prey. With the warmer temperatures there isn't enough year-round ice to support polar bears and other Arctic wildlife.
