What is the Polar Ice Challenge?

The Polar Ice Challenge (PIC) began as a challenge for employees at the Zoo to encourage everyone to action.  Now we hope you will join us in creating a community that is less reliant on fossil fuels.

This is the fourth year our staff have taken the challenge, and we are excited to include our community!  And we want YOU to join in the fun!  See our "Take the Pledge" tab for more information how you and your family can join our staff in the PIC!

Utah's Hogle Zoo and other groups around the world and working together to protect the Arctic Environment and Wildlife.  We believe we have a shared responsibility to inform our community on the threats to the arctic ecosystem and inspire people to take action to help protect our environment.

The biggest threat to arctic wildlife is the loss of their habitat - sea ice.  There has been a dramatic loss of sea ice in the last 30 years.  This is due to disruptions in our global climate.  When we burn fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal, we add more and more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.  This build-up traps heat around the earth much like a blanket would.  This warming disrupts the climate and we are seeing the results of our changing climate with less and less sea ice.

Community Action

As a community, we can join together to decrease carbon dioxide emissions. One way we can do this is by encouraging our schools, workplaces, and neighbors to participate in the Polar Ice Challenge (PIC). The PIC inspires the community to take action at work and at home. Through engaging our guests in programs like these, we can reduce CO2 emissions and keep planet Earth beautiful for future generations of polar bears and people.
